Riyadh travel guide

Riyadh is a city of long distances, glass towers and old mud-brick quarters. Most of its sights are spread across the city, so where you stay decides how much time you spend in taxis.

Best areas to stay

Olaya, along King Fahd Road, is the business and shopping centre, with the Kingdom Centre and Al Faisaliah towers and the widest choice of hotels. The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) to the north is newer and suits business trips.

During Riyadh Season, hotels in the north of the city near the Boulevard zones save a lot of evening travel. For a heritage stay, Diriyah now has boutique hotels a short walk from At-Turaif.

What to see

Start with the National Museum and Masmak Fortress to understand the city's history, then spend an afternoon and evening at At-Turaif and the Bujairi Terrace in Diriyah. Cross the Sky Bridge of the Kingdom Centre after dark, and keep a full afternoon for the Edge of the World.

Getting around

Ride-hailing apps are the simplest way to move around. The Riyadh Metro links the main districts and the airport. Distances are long and the summer heat makes walking hard, so plan sightseeing by area.

When to go

The most comfortable months are from November to March. Summer days are very hot, so outdoor trips like the Edge of the World are best kept for the cooler season.
